How Corbin Burnes performed in his season debut for the Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks ace pitcher Corbin Burnes delivered three scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, his first time pitching on a major league mound in over 15 months.

He finished with two hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

Burnes had not started a game since June 1, 2025, undergoing elbow surgery last summer and suffering a teres major strain during his ramp-up earlier this season.

The four-time All-Star got up to 57 pitches (35 strikes) in his highly-anticipated return, as the plan was to get him to about 60. It was not the most efficient performance — not helped by a 10-pitch at-bat from Vinnie Pasquantino in the third inning — but he held the Royals to 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position by drawing weak contact and missing enough bats (five) when he needed to.

He struck out Salvador Perez on a cutter, his signature pitch, that ran off the outside edge to end his night on a high note.

The Statcast data read that Burnes’ velocity was down across the board from his previous start last summer, which is not surprising. That was the case in his rehab start with Triple-A Reno, as he has some strength to build and command to iron out.

Burnes’ cutter was 92.7 mph, down from 94.1 mph. His sinker averaged 94.1 mph, down from 95.6 mph.

His feel for offspeed pitches was shaky at best, but he attacked the strike zone and missed some bats with his cutter.

Ultimately, Burnes left the game with the score tied at 0-0, and he will continue to build up to make a greater impact on Arizona’s postseason push over the final two-plus weeks.

What Corbin Burnes’ innings looked like in Diamondbacks-Royals

First inning (13 pitches): Burnes walked lead-off hitter Carter Jensen with some uncompetitive misses, but he recorded the next three outs with seven pitches. He jammed Bobby Witt Jr. and Perez with sinkers to get by two of Kansas City’s more dangerous hitters.

Second inning (21 pitches): Michael Massey lined a middle-middle cutter into right field for a lead-off double, and Burnes had to grind to escape without letting in a run. He threw his best changeup of the night to draw an inning-ending fly out from Kyle Isbel, stranding two runners.

Third inning (23 pitches): A 10-pitch battle with Pasquantino with two outs resulted in a double and ended Burnes’ chances of extending into a fourth inning. But he managed to strike out Perez to end the frame.
