Diamondbacks placing reliever Jalen Beeks on IL, reinstating Kendall Graveman

ANAHEIM — The Arizona Diamondbacks are placing left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation, manager Torey Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo before Friday’s game at the Los Angeles Angels.

The D-backs are additionally reinstating right-handed reliever Kendall Graveman.

Lovullo said Beeks had been dealing with the injury for a couple days, as Beeks did not pitch at all during Arizona’s four-game series at the San Diego Padres this week.

“Hopefully on the 16th day he’ll be back with us, that’s the anticipation,” Lovullo said.

Beeks, much like Ryan Thompson and Shelby Miller before they hit the injured list within the past week, had been a mainstay in the bullpen all year.

The southpaw leads the team with 42 appearances this season, working a 4.39 ERA and 3.70 FIP in 41 innings. The D-backs have two active left-handers in the bullpen in Kyle Backhus and Andrew Saalfrank.

Arizona’s injured list bullpen is quite formidable at this point.

The group includes co-closers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez, who both underwent season-ending elbow injuries. Miller (forearm strain) and Thompson (scapular strain) joined that group recently, and Beeks makes that five.

Younger arms Christian Montes De Oca (back surgery) and Cristian Mena (teres major strain) are on that list. Drey Jameson (elbow) could be the eighth man. Perhaps potential long men Tommy Henry, Blake Walston or Jordan Montgomery, who all underwent Tommy John surgery.

“This is a situation unlike any other that I’ve ever been a part of,” Lovullo said.

“I’ve been in this game for 30 years. We are not taking anything for granted. We take on these injuries, we sit down and we talk about how can we be better. … We follow the same protocols we’ve been following  year after year after year. We just are getting clipped and I can’t explain it.”

Kendall Graveman returns

Graveman returns from the IL after missing the past month with a right hip impingement. The veteran started the season on the injured list with back issues before making eight appearances and hitting the shelf again.

His numbers were fine through seven appearances (2.45 ERA, three strikeouts and three walks through 7.1 innings), but they fell off the rails after a disaster outing in Cincinnati on June 7. He allowed six earned runs in an inning and went on the IL shortly after.

He last pitched a rehab outing in the complex league on Tuesday.

The Diamondbacks signed him to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2026 at the start of spring training.
