Diamondbacks place C James McCann on injured list

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks backup catcher James McCann suffered a right quad strain during Monday’s 12-2 win over the San Francisco Giants, manager Torey Lovullo said after the game.

On Tuesday, the D-backs placed McCann on the 10-day IL and selected catcher Aramis Garcia.

McCann entered the blowout as a defensive replacement and beat out an infield single in the eighth inning. He gingerly walked off the field with the athletic trainer after the hit.

Lovullo said McCann would likely need to go on the injured list, but a decision had not been made regarding who would take his place by the time the skipper met with the media.

The Diamondbacks had two other catchers on the active roster: starter Gabriel Moreno and backup Adrian Del Castillo, who has been the primary designated hitter against righties.

“I was just walking through some lineups and scenarios with the front office and then they’ll make that decision and figure out who it is,” Lovullo said postgame.

McCann returned to the Diamondbacks over the offseason to continue providing veteran leadership and a trusted hand behind the plate. He has not hit much this season with a .203 batting average after his single on Monday.

Del Castillo has started eight games behind the plate this season, helping to fill in when Moreno missed time with an oblique strain.

“I think the catch-and-release and the ability to throw runners out has been a big improvement for him,” Lovullo said. “So we feel comfortable with him back there.”

Triple-A Reno had two catchers on its active roster coming into Tuesday: Garcia, who has been up with the big league club once already this season, and Christian Cerda, a 23-year-old prospect acquired in the David Peralta trade back in 2022.

Garcia has played five major league games for the Diamondbacks over the past two seasons, and he is 1-for-3 this year. He was designated for assignment on May 1 and outrighted.

Garcia provides an experienced backup option for a team without much playing time to offer.

The D-backs have 39 players on their 40-man roster. Outfielder Jordan Lawlar, first baseman Pavin Smith and reliever A.J. Puk are working their ways back from the 60-day IL, meaning the D-backs will eventually need to create space on the 40-man roster.
