Diamondbacks call up OF Jorge Barrosa after sending out Jake McCarthy

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled 24-year-old, 5-foot-6 outfielder Jorge Barrosa from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday as the accompanying roster move for sending down outfielder Jake McCarthy.

Barrosa is a speedy, elite defensive outfielder who provides switch-hitting flexibility to the Diamondbacks. In 21 games with Triple-A Reno this year, Barrosa is batting .295/.362/.495 with three home runs, 10 doubles and 16 RBIs.

“He’s a great defender, instinctive out in center field,” D-backs farm director Chris Slivka told Arizona Sports on Monday.

“He has great bat-to-ball skills and we’re continuing to emphasize using the entire field to him. As he continues to get better using the opposite-field gap and tightens up the approach, I think there’s a lot to be excited about. I know he gets a lot of credit for his defense, but we still think he’s a pretty sound offensive player, too.”

The Diamondbacks optioned McCarthy on Monday, as he’s started the season struggling to make an impact offensively. After a productive 2024 season (.749 OPS), the speedy McCarthy started 2025 0-for-24 and is 3-for-41 in the big leagues.

Barrosa’s defensive versatility will allow the Diamondbacks to move him wherever needed. He joins an outfield unit with right fielder Corbin Carroll, left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., center fielder Alek Thomas and platoon corner outfielder Randal Grichuk. Utility infielder Garrett Hampson can also play in the outfield.

McCarthy is the only other outfielder on the 40-man roster, although Blaze Alexander has received reps out there for versatility.

Jorge Barrosa debuted for Diamondbacks last year

Barrosa made his MLB debut last season, joining the team after Thomas suffered a hamstring strain during opening week. Barrosa doubled in his first plate appearance and played in eight games overall last year (3-for-17).

After playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League, Barrosa hit .320 in 11 major league spring training games. MLB Pipeline ranked him No. 21 on the list of D-backs prospects coming into the season.

He first joined the Diamondbacks in 2017 as a 16-year-old international free agent from Venezuela.
