Ketel Marte, Diamondbacks agree to reworked $116.5 million contract

The Arizona Diamondbacks and star second baseman Ketel Marte have agreed to terms on a new contract, the team announced Wednesday.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and AZCentral.com’s Nic Piecoro were first to report the deal.

The deal runs through 2031 and is worth $116.5 million, $64 million of which is new money. Piecoro adds there is an additional year that is a player option and $46 million is deferred money.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, there is a five-team no-trade clause and no signing bonus.

His previous deal went through a club option season in 2028.

Mike Rodriguez first reported the contract negotiations on Tuesday.

Marte, a powerful switch-hitter from the Dominican Republic, signed a five-year, $76 million deal with the club ahead of the 2022 season. It ran through 2027 with a $13 million club option for 2028.

This is Marte’s ninth year with the Diamondbacks, who acquired him and pitcher Taijuan Walker from the Seattle Mariners for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis.

Since then, Marte has developed into one of the faces of the franchise, with top five MVP finishes in 2019 and 2024 and the 2023 NLCS MVP award.

Last year, Marte finished third in the MVP race despite missing time with an ankle injury in the second half. The 31-year-old hit .292 with a .932 OPS in 136 games, setting career highs with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs.

He earned his second career All-Star Game appearance and a Silver Slugger award as the best hitter among second basemen in baseball.

He also played terrific defense and was named a Gold Glove finalist.

Through five games this season, Marte is batting .273 with a couple doubles and four walks.

His 28.8 WAR (Baseball Reference) ranks third among position players in club history, right behind Luis Gonzalez (30.0) for second.

Marte is top five in franchise history in games played, total bases, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, walks and runs created.

The Diamondbacks have extended several members of their young core this spring, with new deals signed by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, reliever Justin Martinez and starter Brandon Pfaadt.
