Ketel Marte heckler banned from all MLB ballparks

The fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother has been banned indefinitely from all MLB ballparks, according to a team spokesperson.

The update comes after the White Sox banned the fan from Chicago’s Rate Field earlier on Wednesday.

The team added that the 22-year-old fan admitted to being very inappropriate and was remorseful after the fact.

“(Marte) is a remarkable young man. He’s incredibly strong and last night was not easy for him,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s game. “We’re waking up today and we’re grateful for the support that the baseball world and fans of Arizona have given us. The Chicago White Sox as well. They’ve been very supportive. We’re ready to move on and I think that’s the best thing for everybody.”

The White Sox also posted a message to Marte upon his first at-bat.

“The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte,” the video boards read.

White Sox fan banned for heckling D-backs’ Ketel Marte about late mother

The ban comes after Marte was visibly shaken up midway through Tuesday’s 4-1 win over the White Sox.

During a pitching change in the seventh inning, Marte was in tears and being consoled by manager Torey Lovullo and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.

It was later discovered that a fan had yelled something at the second baseman regarding his late mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in 2017. Marte, fresh into his D-backs stint, was just 23 at the time of her death.

The fan was later ejected from the game.

“I had a little bit of an interaction with him as I was yelling at him,” Lovullo said of the fan. “He wasn’t getting it and was very pompous and it didn’t sit right with me. I think there was probably a review of it and everybody saw that. We need better baseball fans. Baseball deserves better.”

Marte went 2-for-4 on the day, blasting a solo home run in the first inning of Tuesday’s victory.
