Ketel Marte caps 5-spot with milestone home run vs. Marlins

PHOENIX — Ketel Marte became the third player in Arizona Diamondbacks history to drive in 500 runs for the club on Saturday against the Miami Marlins.

Marte punched an opposite-field, three-run home run into the Arizona bullpen off Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara to cap a five-run fourth inning. The home run also pushed the Diamondbacks ahead 6-3 after they previously trailed 3-1 entering the inning.

Alcantara started Marte off with a changeup off the outside edge, and somehow Marte extended his arms and got enough of the pitch to lift it just over the wall.

It was Marte’s 16th home run and 35th RBI this season. The D-backs brought nine batters to the plate during the frame, as Randal Grichuk, Jake McCarthy and James McCann each singled to start the rally. After a Geraldo Perdomo RBI knock with two outs, Marte delivered the go-ahead blow.

Only Luis Gonzalez (774) and Paul Goldschmidt (710) have more RBIs as a Diamondback than Marte, who signed a six-year extension with the club in April. Marte passed David Peralta (468) and Steve Finley (479) to crack the top three earlier this season.

It took Marte no time for his 501st RBI with the team, as he delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. 

Marte, who joined the D-backs ahead of the 2017 season, set a career high with 95 RBIs last season.
