Ketel Marte moves into 2nd on Diamondbacks’ all-time games played list

On June 28, 2017, a 23-year-old Ketel Marte made his Arizona Diamondbacks debut as a pinch hitter during a midweek game at Chase Field against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He faced Adam Wainwright, hitting between Chris Hermann and Daniel Descalso.

Nearly nine years later, Marte dug into the batter’s box at Globe Life Field in Arlington on Tuesday for his 1,093rd game with the Diamondbacks, moving into second place for games played in franchise history.

Marte passed Paul Goldschmidt and has to play in 101 more games before he catches Luis Gonzalez. The Diamondbacks have 121 games left this season, giving Marte the chance to become the franchise leader. His contract that runs through at least 2030 will allow him to build a formidable lead.

The D-backs extended Marte last year, and despite trade chatter over the offseason, they opted to keep their three-time All-Star. With 10-5 rights (10 years in MLB, five with one franchise) kicking in last month, Marte now owns a no-trade clause.

Marte is all over the Diamondbacks’ all-time lists, from his .843 OPS (fourth), 627 runs (third), 1,130 hits (third), 240 doubles (third), 173 home runs (third) and 552 RBIs (third).

Many categories start with Gonzalez and Goldschmidt, followed by Marte.

The 32-year-old has not seen typical results this season at the plate with a .640 OPS and five home runs entering Tuesday.

With how hard he’s hit the ball this year, expectations are he will turn this around, although his walk and chase rates are clear areas in need of improvement. Manager Torey Lovullo has put Marte back in the lead-off spot recently.

Only five players in Major League Baseball have played at least 1,093 games with one franchise since 2017: Jose Ramirez (Cleveland Guardians), Aaron Judge (New York Yankees), Ian Happ (Chicago Cubs), Jose Altuve (Houston Astros) and Marte.
