Diamondbacks milestone: Ketel Marte moves into 2nd on franchise hits list

PHOENIX — Ketel Marte skied a lead-off home run into the away bullpen at Chase Field on Monday, rising to second on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ all-time hits leaderboard.

Marte tied Paul Goldschmidt with 1,182 hits on the Diamondbacks, and the sole player ahead is Luis Gonzalez at 1,337. Only 155 hits to go, which is less than Marte’s career high (187 in 2019).

With Marte under contract long-term in Arizona, he could break the record by next season (health permitting).

Marte has climbed into the top three in franchise history in many counting statistics at the plate:

• 2,062 total bases (third)
• 652 runs scored (third)
• 183 home runs (third)
• 252 doubles (third)
• 586 RBIs (third)
• 454 walks (third)
• 1,134 games played (second)

The only players ahead of him are Gonzalez and Goldschmidt, a testament to Marte’s longevity in Arizona and development from a skinny, athletic middle infielder to the league’s top slugger at second base. The Diamondbacks extended him through 2030 with a player option for 2031, and his 10-5 no-trade rights (10 years in MLB, five seasons with Arizona) kicked in this spring.

Marte has homered in three straight games, which tied a career high. He has 16 home runs this season, second among second basemen (Brandon Lowe has 20 for the Pittsburgh Pirates).

The latest blast came off a familiar arm, as he took San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Mahle deep on his second pitch of the game. Marte entered Monday 8-for-15 with two home runs off Mahle, one of which he hit earlier this year.
