Ketel Marte answers the many questions that came with no-show

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte spoke with the media on Monday for the first time since his no-show in Boston and subsequent stint on the injured list for a knee injury.

Marte’s lack of communication with the organization and the many missing details surrounding the entire saga left for lots of questions to be asked to fill in the blanks.

He was asked a fair share of those prior to his expected return to the lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies, as well as before he addressed the full team.

Below is a full transcription of Marte’s answers, which were provided through a team interpreter.

What happened in Boston? What were you feeling and what kept you from coming to the ballpark?

“It was a moment of frustration. I’m the type of person (that) when something is going on in my life, I don’t like to talk about it. So that’s kind of what was going on.”

What was your frustration specifically about? Was it with (manager) Torey (Lovullo)?

“Torey, nothing. I get along really well with Torey. In that instance, I failed him by not showing up. That morning I woke up, my body was in pain and I couldn’t react. No one made the decision for me. I’m the one that made the decision to not show up.”

What do you want the guys in the clubhouse to understand about what happened?

“Those are the things that we are going to talk about right now. I’m going to stand in front of my teammates like a man. I don’t want any of my teammates to go through what I went through that morning.”

Why were you at the casino while your teammates were playing a home game?

“I’ve been injured before (and) those were things that I do with my personal time. Things in my personal time.”

When did you leave Boston and where did you go until you returned to Arizona for your MRI?

“I never left. The day that the team returned, I returned.”

How are you feeling both mentally and physically?

“Both, very well. I’m going to feel even better when I address my teammates. Little by little.”

Are you going to apologize to your teammates?

“I’ve already done so with some of my teammates and I’m going to do so once again in front of everybody.”

Do you have a message for the fans?

*shakes head no*

What do you regret the most about all of this?

“Not going to the stadium. That’s what I regret.”

What have the last few weeks been like for both you and communicating with your teammates?

“A lot of things circulating in the media. Everyone has a job to do. The only thing I can do is sit back and observe and watch.”

Do you hope that your message to the clubhouse can unite the team or at least push you all past this?

“Definitely. Like a man, I’m going to stand up in front of them (and) ask for forgiveness. We’re human. We all commit mistakes.”

What was your headspace when remarks from teammates were getting leaked to the media?

“I love my teammates. I understand their frustration. I understand the most important thing right now is that I’m doing well and my family is doing well as well.”

When you scrubbed your Instagram page of D-backs pictures, was that because of frustration with the organization?

“No, not at all. If people would observe, they would see that I also removed pictures from Seattle and family pictures. People kind of see that and go with what they’re inclined to think.”

Could you see this happening again and how do you improve your communication?

“That’s what we’re looking for — become a better player, become a better person. They know that I’m human and I’ve committed mistakes because I’m human.”
