Ketel Marte scratched from Diamondbacks lineup due to illness Friday vs. Mets, Jose Fernandez in

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was scratched from the lineup due to an illness about 90 minutes before first pitch on Friday against the New York Mets.

Marte will miss his second game of the season after his first came in the middle of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles in April due to back tightness.

The Diamondbacks middle infielder is 0 for his last 8 at the plate and just 2 for his last 26, as it’s been a struggle offensively through the first month-plus of the season.

Marte was slated to hit second, and Ildemaro Vargas will do so instead. Infielder Jose Fernandez will start in Marte’s place and he will hit eighth. Fernandez will play first base and Vargas will slide over to second base after originally being listed at first.

After a late lineup change on Friday, expect an exciting addition to the lineup on Saturday.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Friday that D-backs top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt will start Saturday’s game in center field.

Waldschmidt received his first MLB call-up Friday from Triple-A Reno as Alek Thomas was designated for assignment.

The Diamondbacks have lost six of their last seven games and will look to right the ship at home on Friday against a team that is tied for the worst record in baseball.
