Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was scratched from Thursday’s lineup for the D-backs’ makeup game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Team broadcaster Steve Zinsmeister reported about an hour before first pitch Marte was dealing with back stiffness.
SI’s Jack Sommers added Marte has been nursing soreness for a few days now. The D-backs’ star DH’d in the first two games against the Athletics, and Sommers said Marte has had a big wrap on his torso before games lately.
Marte has been harped on throughout the year and back into the 2025 season for sitting out of games.
The D-backs’ star played in 136 games in 2024 and 126 games in 2025. However, despite the backlash the three-time All-Star has received, Thursday is just the fifth game this season that Marte has missed.
Only Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo have played in more games this season (each are playing in their 100th games on Thursday compared to Marte’s 98).
Marte was leading off at second base before he was scratched. Here’s the Diamondbacks’ updated lineup as the makeup game is underway:
- RF Corbin Carroll
- SS Geraldo Perdomo
- C Gabriel Moreno
- LF Max Kepler
- DH Adrian Del Castillo
- 3B Tim Tawa
- 2B Ildemaro Vargas
- 1B Tyler Locklear
- CF Ryan Waldschmidt
Arizona has won eight of its last 10 games. Thursday marked the first in a 10-game, four-city road trip that takes Arizona right up to the trade deadline.
