Diamondbacks 2B Ketel Marte wins 1st career Silver Slugger

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Ketel Marte has collected his first career Silver Slugger award as the best hitter among second baseman in the National League for 2024.

Marte is the first D-backs player to win a Silver Slugger since pitcher Zack Greinke in 2019. The last position players to do so were first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and outfielder David Peralta in 2018.

Aaron Hill is the only other D-backs second baseman to win the award, doing so back in 2012.

Managers and three coaches from every MLB team vote for the winners.

Marte led major league second baseman with a .932 OPS, 36 home runs and 95 RBIs. He was far-and-away the most productive hitter at his position, as the next highest OPS among qualified second basemen came from Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros at .789.

Only five players in the past decade have blasted 36 home runs while playing most of their games at second base: Marte, Marcus Semien (45 in 2021), Brian Dozier (42 in 2016), Robinson Cano (39 in 2016) and Brandon Lowe (39 in 2021).

Marte has come up frequently during awards season. He was named a finalist for the Gold Glove, Hank Aaron Award, All-MLB team and NL MVP.

He is the ninth Diamondbacks player overall to win Silver Slugger. The other eight are Greinke (2019), Goldschmidt (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018), Peralta (2018), Hill (2012), Daniel Hudson (2011), Justin Upton (2011), Micah Owings (2007) and Luis Gonzalez (2001).
