Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was designated for assignment on Sunday, the team announced.

Infielder Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take Gurriel’s spot on the active roster.

Gurriel has played 51 games this season and has hit two home runs while slashing .210/.254/.290 with a .544 OPS (all career lows).

The 32-year-old made his season debut on April 18, which was ahead of schedule after he tore his ACL just several months earlier on Sept. 1, 2025. He also spent time on the injured list this season with hamstring and adductor issues.

Gurriel’s first season with the team was 2023, when he was an All-Star who helped Arizona reach the World Series. He had a .772 OPS that season with a career-high 24 home runs.

Arizona had a club option on Gurriel’s contract for the 2027 season, but it came with a $5 million buyout if the club did not opt in to bringing him back. The outfielder signed the three-year, $42 million deal after his All-Star season.

Did injuries crush this guy or was he just a "one hit wonder?" Sad, because he was one of my favorites.
