Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and pitcher Merrill Kelly were both ejected for arguing with first base umpire Laz Diaz in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s 4-3 win against the Baltimore Orioles.

After Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins doubled to open the seventh inning, Tyler O’Neill drew a walk after it appeared he seemingly got away with a checked swing with two strikes.

That prompted Lovullo to remove Kelly from the game, and when Kelly was exiting with the Diamondbacks leading 4-2, Kelly and Lovullo were both arguing about the call with Diaz. Kelly was tossed walking off the field and Lovullo then got in the face of Diaz and was tossed.

When Lovullo walked off the field, he received a standing ovation from the Chase Field crowd. Jeff Banister took over as manager for Arizona.

Kelly left the game with six innings pitched, allowing three runs on three hits. After allowing two runs in the first inning, he retired the next 12 Orioles in a row.

Tuesday marked Lovullo’s first ejection this season and the 21st during his career.
