The Arizona Diamondbacks set their lineup for Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox without third baseman Nolan Arenado, who exited on Sunday in Atlanta with left trunk discomfort.
Arenado told reporters on Sunday that he was concerned, and he underwent an MRI on Monday in Boston. He was back out on the field with a bat pregame at Fenway Park and told Diamondbacks team reporter Jody Jackson that he was feeling better: “It’s not the worst but it’s something.”
Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro suggested Arenado may “try to grind through” the issue.
A trunk injury could involve the spine, ribcage, chest and abdominal wall (intercostal or oblique strains, for example).
I asked Torey Lovullo what the conversation with Nolan was like after he said he was going to grind this out and avoid IL
“ I wanted to hug him and tell him thank you” appreciating his toughness.

Arenado has been a significant piece of the Diamondbacks’ offense this season, as he entered Monday second on the team with 20 home runs and 62 RBIs. Even through some ups and downs, Arenado has been a key run producer the Diamondbacks have needed with their lack of overall power.
His solid defense and the invaluable standard he sets through his work behind the scenes have added to the value he has brought this year, adding concern that his injury could have sidelined him.
First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
