Third baseman Nolan Arenado has been scratched from the Arizona Diamondbacks’ lineup Saturday against the Seattle Mariners.

Arenado has been dealing with a groin injury since Tuesday, which forced him to miss two games before he came off the bench to pinch-hit in Friday’s series opener against the Mariners.

Before Friday’s game, Arenado said he would be available off the bench and expected to be back in the starting lineup on Saturday.

That proved to be the case until he was scratched about 90 minutes before first pitch Saturday.

Arenado came in to pinch-hit in the seventh inning on Friday, and within two plate appearances, he fouled a pitch off his leg, singled and was hit by a 98-mph pitch and left the game.

Therefore, the reason for Arenado’s absence from the D-backs lineup could be his groin, leg or from the hit-by-pitch, but the more worrisome part is that it was a late scratch.

Jose Fernandez replaced Arenado in the lineup, and here’s the rest of the D-backs starting nine:

  1. 2B Ketel Marte
  2. RF Corbin Carroll
  3. SS Geraldo Perdomo
  4. C Gabriel Moreno
  5. DH Adrian Del Castillo
  6. CF Ryan Waldschmidt
  7. 1B Ildemaro Vargas
  8. 3B Jose Fernandez
  9. LF Tommy Troy

First pitch for Diamondbacks-Mariners is at 7:10 p.m. and can be listened to in the Arizona Sports app, on 98.7 FM and on ArizonaSports.com.
