Diamondbacks 1B Pavin Smith likely out for rest of 2025

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Pavin Smith is “trending toward” missing the remainder of the 2025 season due to a quad injury, manager Torey Lovullo told the pregame radio show on Saturday.

Smith landed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left quad strain he suffered on Wednesday at the Milwaukee Brewers. He had just returned from an IL stint on Aug. 18, as he missed the previous six weeks with an oblique strain.

If he is indeed done, Smith will have played eight games after the All-Star break this season.

Smith’s first half was uneven, as he continued where he left off last September with a blazing-hot first month. Through April, Smith hit .342 with a 1.103 OPS in 91 plate appearances, both of which ranked top five in Major League Baseball (minimum 90 PAs).

He cooled off, however, hitting .222 with an OPS of .662 in 59 games since the start of May. Half of his eight home runs this year were hit before the end of April.

Smith entered the season in the designated hitter role against right-handed pitchers, and he was positioned to start at first base against righties down the stretch after Arizona traded Josh Naylor at the deadline. The opportunity is now Tyler Locklear’s to take advantage of with more regular playing time.

Smith, 29, remains under team control until 2028 and is arbitration eligible this upcoming offseason.

Ketel Marte dealing with forearm discomfort

Second baseman Ketel Marte started Saturday’s game as the designated hitter, his second straight game as the DH. Lovullo told reporters that Marte is dealing with right forearm fatigue.

Marte went 0-for-1 on Friday with three walks as the lead-off hitter.

Ildemaro Vargas started at second base on Saturday with Jordan Lawlar on the bench and Blaze Alexander back at third.
