Diamondbacks’ Ryne Nelson to 60-day injured list
The Diamondbacks needed a 40-man roster spot to activate outfielder Max Kepler from the restricted list.

The Arizona Diamondbacks provided some expected clarity on starting pitcher Ryne Nelson’s timeline by transferring him to the 60-day injured list on Thursday.
Arizona needed a 40-man roster spot to activate outfielder Max Kepler from the restricted list, and by moving Nelson to the 60-day IL, they made him ineligible to return until the middle of August at the soonest.
That’s not surprising, considering he went on the IL with a UCL sprain and flexor muscle strain in his right arm on June 16. The plan for Nelson was to not throw a baseball for four-to-six weeks and get re-imaged. There will be a ramp-up period when he’s healthy.
“I think for the most part just disappointed that I can’t go out there and compete and try and help this team win,” Nelson said at the time. “But hopefully if everything goes well, I can get back and help them this year and try and help down the stretch.”
Nelson is the seventh pitcher on Arizona’s 60-day IL, alongside Corbin Burnes, A.J. Puk, Justin Martinez, Andrew Saalfrank, Cristian Mena and Blake Walston.
Burnes is pushing for a September return, Martinez entered the season with a late August target and Puk was recently shut down from throwing due to a capsule strain, muddying his potential return this season.
Arizona also placed starting pitcher Michael Soroka on the 15-day IL with a glute strain shortly after Nelson, so there are significant pitching reinforcements on the shelf whom the Diamondbacks will hope to get back at some point.
The Diamondbacks additionally optioned pitcher Mitch Bratt after his MLB debut on Wednesday, optioned utility player Tim Tawa and recalled reliever Juan Burgos to round out Thursday’s moves.

Usually if a guy like this is called up it is a short term move to have a guy who can eat some innings if a game gets out of hand rather than using major league bullpen guys. It also keeps them from wasting a "send down" on a better/younger guy. If its true the Pfaadt will pitch tomorrow, Burgos is most likely to be sent down.
Driving back from an appointment and I heard on the Burns & Gambo show that Pfaadt is going to be the starting pitcher on Friday if tonight's game isn't cancelled due to weather.
Why Juan Burgos? He has a 6.59 ERA in Reno which is like 8 to 10 ERA in the majors.
