Diamondbacks sign veteran 1B/OF Seth Brown to minor league deal

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks signed veteran first baseman/outfielder Seth Brown to a minor league contract on Friday.

Brown will join the Triple-A Reno Aces.

The 32-year-old, left-handed hitter has spent the past decade in the Athletics’ organization, playing 568 major league games. The A’s placed Brown on the 10-day injured list retroactive to June 13 with left elbow lateral epicondylitis, and he was released on June 25.

Brown hit 45 home runs for Oakland from 2021-22, during which time he hit slashed .224/.294/.457. His production has taken a dip since then with a .667 OPS over the past three seasons. He has extreme platoon splits with a career .512 OPS against lefties compared to a .742 OPS against right-handed pitchers.

He crushed the ball in a short Triple-A stint this year, hitting .500 (21-for-42) with seven home runs and 13 RBIs in only nine games played.

Brown joins the organization after the Aces lost fellow veteran first baseman Trey Mancini, who opted out of his minor league contract earlier this week.

If he ends up on the D-backs’ active roster to end the season, he is arbitration eligible for another year before hitting free agency in 2027.

The Diamondbacks have left-handed hitters Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor splitting time at first base, so Brown provides some organizational depth.
