Sutton returns to booth, just not for D-backs

Diamondbacks’ lead play-by-play broadcaster Daron Sutton hasn’t been in the booth since mid-June, when he was suspended by the team indefinitely.

But that hasn’t stopped him from making a return to the airwaves.

On last week’s edition of Fox’s Game of the Week, Sutton made his return to the booth to call a Nationals-Braves game. This Saturday, Sutton once again appeared on Fox’s regional coverage of a Twins-Tigers game.

Which begs the question, will Sutton make a return to Chase Field this season or even in 2013?

As of now, the Diamondbacks don’t appear to have changed their stance on his possible return.

“Nothing new (to report),” Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall told the Arizona Republic this weekend. “His contract entitles him to do select national games this season. He always does a handful.”

Sutton, who has been with the Diamondbacks since 2007, hasn’t been on the air since broadcasting the team’s 14-10 win over the Mariners on June 20.

Since Sutton’s suspension took effect, radio voice Greg Schulte has taken over the TV play-by-play duties.
