Save the ball: Diamondbacks’ Tommy Troy doubles in 1st major league at-bat

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks prospects are on a roll in their first major league plate appearances this year, a trend that Tommy Troy followed in Sunday’s 9-1 win against the Colorado Rockies.

Troy, making his MLB debut and starting in left field, hit a double to left-center field in his first at-bat, doing so against 15-year veteran left-hander Jose Quintana.

Rockies outfielder and former Diamondback Jake McCarthy nearly robbed Troy with a sliding attempt, but the ball found the turf to allow Troy to skip to second base.

He scored his first run shortly after, as Ketel Marte followed with a two-run, ground-rule double.

Diamondbacks rookies Jose Fernandez and Ryan Waldschmidt both singled in their respective first MLB at-bats earlier this season. All three were in the lineup on Sunday, representing the newest wave of young talent on the ballclub.

Troy kept it going with a double to right-center field during his third at-bat, a ball he hit 106.8 mph off the bat. He finished 2-for-4.

“Just everything that I could have dreamed of, honestly,” Troy said of his debut. “All the guys here are so supportive, loosening me up. I was a little nervous at first, but such a great moment.”

On how his first hit helped him settle in, Troy added, “I feel like that’s super important. At least, making contact. You’ve got to just put the ball in play … and then everything settles and you relax a bit.”

He performed with a large fan section, as his family and his girlfriend’s family were at Chase Field for the occasion.

Troy said he imagines his father will end up with the baseball from his first hit.

Arizona selected Troy on Saturday as the corresponding move to placing Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

Troy is the No. 4 prospect in the system ranked by MLB Pipeline as a 2023 first-round pick from Stanford.

“Today’s the day. I feel very good about putting him in left field. I feel very good about his ability to go out there and have quality at-bats,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame. “It’s what he’s done his whole career. It’s what he’s been learning to do and refine even more as he’s progressed through the system. Great opportunity for him to go out there and just be himself.”

The D-backs are going to rely on Troy in left field while Gurriel recovers.
