Trumbo’s grand slam, Miley’s seven strong innings help D-backs beat Giants: By The Numbers

What a difference a change of scenery makes.

After a 10-game road trip from Sept. 1-11 in which he drove in just one run, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Trumbo quadrupled that total with one swing in the friendly confines of Phoenix’s Chase Field on Monday night.

Trumbo’s third-inning grand slam gave the D-backs a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. It was his second career grand slam and his first since 2011.

Also, after lasting just 2.0 innings in Tuesday’s start at San Francisco, pitcher Wade Miley yielded just one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work against the Giants on Monday.

With a 62-88 record, the D-backs are well outside of the playoff race, but they did damage to the Giants’ hopes of winning the National League West division, pushing them four games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. (The Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 11-3 on Monday.)

After giving up a pair of hits, reliever Evan Marshall worked himself out of an eighth-inning jam with back-to-back outs. With runners on the corners and the potential tying run on deck, Marshall struck out pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa and induced a groundout from outfielder Gregor Blanco to end the threat.

The D-backs snapped a four-game losing streak to San Francisco. They are 6-11 against the Giants this season.

Miley scored his third run of the season in the third inning via Trumbo’s grand slam. Miley reached on a one-out single to left-center, his ninth hit of the year.

Trumbo had a season-high five RBI on the evening to increase his total to 49 this year. His previous high was four in a 14-4 home win over the Rockies on Aug. 9. Trumbo is hitting .239 in 77 games in 2014.
