The Arizona Diamondbacks named catcher Carlos Virahonda and starter David Hagaman the club’s 2026 Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year on Monday.
Both players have emerged as young players to watch in Arizona over the past year-plus, climbing into the top five of the organization’s MLB Pipeline and Baseball America prospect rankings.
Virahonda is a 20-year-old catcher who made it to Double-A Amarillo at the end of the season — the average age for hitters in the Texas League was 23.8.
Arguably the biggest riser in the farm system, the Venezuelan backstop hit 20 doubles, 19 home runs and drove in 94 runs in 102 games played this season across three levels.
The stat wRC+ measures players compared to the league average, and Virahonda was at least 15% better than the average hitter at each level he played at this season, finishing with an .870 OPS.
He came into the spring known as a strong defender and high on-base percentage hitter who said he wanted to take more shots for power. He slugged .493, leading the farm system in RBIs.

Via MLB Pipeline:
His power output has taken a nice jump in 2026 as he’s more than quadrupled his previous career-best home run total. His overall profile earns a boost for the fact that he looks like an above-average, potentially even plus defender behind the plate. Standing at 5-foot-11, he moves well back there to earn good reviews for his receiving and blocking, and he’s quick with his throws, getting the ball out efficiently to limit the opposing running game.
Virahonda caught a shutout and homered twice during the postseason, as Amarillo won the Texas League title — he was the catcher when Alfred Morillo backflipped off the mound after winning the championship.
Hagaman joined the organization at the 2025 trade deadline as the third pitcher Arizona acquired from the Texas Rangers for Merrill Kelly: Kohl Drake, Mitch Bratt and Hagaman.
The lone right-hander of the three, Hagaman got in some work late in 2025 and during the Arizona Fall League after the trade, as he was coming off 2024 elbow surgery.
He pitched well in a small sample size and carried it over, as the 23-year-old made 22 starts with a 2.87 ERA in 2026. He struck out 11.14 hitters per nine innings, using a mid-90s mph fastball with good rising action, a curveball, slider and changeup.

He threw a career-high 106.2 innings and will have to show how he handles an expanded workload.
Hagaman also finished the year in Double-A and should push for top 100 prospect status if he continues to make progress next season.
