Wild Card standings: D-backs chasing Phillies as time dwindles

The Arizona Diamondbacks have lingered in the thick of the NL Wild Card hunt for the fourth straight season.

Reaching the postseason came down to the final week in the past three seasons. While a World Series appearance followed in 2023, the D-backs hope to break a 2-year-old trend of falling short in the standings this year.

The D-backs have dealt with star second baseman Ketel Marte no-showing his team in the heart of the playoff chase, not to mention plenty of injuries to starting pitchers both before and after the All-Star break. Manager Torey Lovullo’s and general manager Mike Hazen’s jobs could be at risk if Arizona falls short this time around, especially with the skipper’s contract ending after 2026.

With the Chicago Cubs atop the Wild Card standings, a push by the San Diego Padres has made the Philadelphia Phillies the target for the Diamondbacks to overtake in the standings to grab the third and final available spot.
