The Athletic: Zac Gallen a trade candidate

Zac Gallen surprisingly re-signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year deal. That means he'll be back in trade rumors like a year ago.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden listed Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen as a candidate to be dealt at the trade deadline.

Gallen, 30, returned to the Diamondbacks in the offseason on a one-year deal at $16.9 million but has struggled in his seven starts in 2026, posting a 4.45 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.

Batters are hitting .302 against Gallen this season, and he has given up 11 extra-base hits.

So far, he’s looked more like 2025 Zac Gallen than the Cy Young contender version. However, Gallen has been a reliable workhorse throughout his career, even when he hasn’t been at his most effective. Since he’ll be a free agent again at the end of this year, teams are going to be scouting him closely ahead of the trade deadline.

Gallen struggled for much of last season and did not sign until mid-February. He made 33 starts and had a 4.83 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

He has been able to stay healthy, however, and shown he can eat up innings.

Entering this season, the right-hander ranked third in innings pitched in MLB over the past four seasons and was second in wins, only behind Framber Valdez.

Since arriving in Arizona in a 2019 deal that sent Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Miami Marlins, Gallen ranks third in franchise history in innings (1,003.1), third in starts (176), fourth in bWAR for pitchers (19.6) and fifth in win probability added (8.4).

All they need is a substandard web site to cover substandard teams (Dbacks, Suns, Cardinals). Well done, AZ Sports.
