Report: Suns expected to offer Devin Booker contract extension this summer

The Phoenix Suns are expected to offer star Devin Booker a contract extension this summer, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The extension, which Booker is eligible to sign this summer, would span two years and be worth $149.8 million.

Booker was the franchise player before Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal were acquired, and he remains the franchise player. He was the franchise player before Budenholzer and previous one-year coach Frank Vogel — Ishbia is on the hook for paying the departed coaches around $18 million combined next season, sources said — and Booker remains so as he finishes the first season of a four-year, $220 million extension. Booker is eligible to sign (an) extension this summer, which Phoenix is expected to offer, sources said.

The extension talk falls in line with owner Mat Ishbia’s comments this past March on the team’s focus to “pivot and reload” around Booker in an interview with ESPN’s Tim McMahon.

Booker is coming off his 10th season with the Suns after joining the organization as the No. 13 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

In 75 games played last year, the guard averaged 25.6 points on 46.1% shooting and 33.2% from 3-point land. He added 4.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists across 37.3 minutes per game.

Booker, who signed a supermax extension in 2022, set a career mark in assists and minutes while seeing his 3-point percentage and scoring take a dip.

News of Suns offering Devin Booker contract extension this summer comes amid offseason change

The news of the Suns’ intentions to extend Booker comes after Phoenix fired head coach Mike Budenholzer following a dismal 36-46 season that ended without a playoff appearance.

The Suns are now on the search for their fourth head coach in as many seasons.

And even more change is expected in Phoenix.

Kevin Durant’s name continues to be thrown around in trade rumors. The idea of waiving and stretching guard Bradley Beal — and how it could even be achieved — has been floated around, too.

Either way, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro says there’s a 0% chance that Beal plays for the Suns next year.
