Footprint Center no more: Suns, Mercury renaming arena

The home of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury is undergoing a name change from Footprint Center, confirms Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Gambadoro adds the arena will be called PHX Arena on an interim basis. Footprint will also remain a sustainability partner for Phoenix.

The news of the name change comes after signage around the arena was taken down recently.

Why the change is happening, or any prospective partners for the naming rights are not known at this time.

When did Footprint land Phoenix arena naming rights?

Footprint, a local material science company focused on positive environmental impact founded by Troy Swope and Yoke Chung, was named as the arena’s naming partner on July 16, 2021.

The arena did not have a partner for months after Talking Stick Resort’s five-year naming rights agreement concluded in November 2020.

Since its opening in 1992, the home of the Suns and Mercury has undergone a handful of name changes:

– America West Arena (1992-2006)
– US Airways Arena (2006-2015)
– Talking Stick Resort Arena (2015-2020)
– Phoenix Suns Arena (2020-21)
– Footprint Center (2021-25)

The Suns are back in action Thursday night against the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 and arizonasports.com.
