Report: Pistons, not Suns, claim guard Jordan McRae off waivers

After the Denver Nuggets waived Jordan McRae, the Detroit Pistons have claimed the guard off waivers, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday.

Wojnarowski initially reported that McRae would be waived and the Suns were the “likely destination” before Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes reported that the Suns would be claiming McRae off waivers. But Detroit has a worse record and therefore gets waiver priority, and an injury to Derrick Rose made it that the Pistons wanted McRae’s services.

Phoenix could have gotten some much-needed offense and shooting off the bench with McRae, who shot 37.7% from deep on 3.7 attempts per game in Washington. With the poor play of former guard Tyler Johnson, the Suns have been unable to find a consistent offensive creator off the bench, a role McRae can fill better than the likes of Elie Okobo, Jevon Carter and Ty Jerome.

Jerome was even sent to the Northern Arizona Suns on Wednesday.

McRae, 28, has been bouncing around NBA and summer league rosters since he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs 58th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft out of Tennessee. That included him signing a 10-day contract with the Suns in the 2015-16 season.

He signed a two-way contract with the Wizards in the summer of 2018, where he would finally find that consistent role the following season when Washington converted his contract to a traditional one. This season, McRae averaged 12.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists for Washington in 22.6 minutes per game.

McRae was then traded to the Nuggets in early February for point guard Shabazz Napier.
