Mike D’Antoni thinks Shawn Marion should be the next Sun inducted into the Hall of Fame

Steve Nash entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. Former Phoenix Suns teammate Amar’e Stoudemire and their coach, Mike D’Antoni, joined him in August.

According to the mind behind the 7 Seconds or Less offense, another former Sun shouldn’t be far behind in joining the trio.

Shawn Marion was a key figure in one of the most successful eras of Phoenix basketball, and D’Antoni said that he deserves to be the next Sun to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“Hopefully not too long now,” D’Antoni told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta. “I know he’s getting pretty antsy.”

Marion has been outspoken about his Hall of Fame-worthy career since retiring in 2015.

He earned four NBA All-Star berths, two All-NBA nods and won a championship in 2011 with the Dallas Mavericks.

Marion was the No. 9 overall pick in 1999 and earned all of his All-Star campaigns with the Suns before being traded for Shaquille O’Neal in 2008. In Suns franchise history, you won’t see a leaderboard without his name on it.

Marion ranks fifth in total points, second in total rebounds, second in total steals, third in total blocks and fifth in 3-pointers made. The only major stat he isn’t top five in is assists, where he ranks 18th.

“If they’re saying the 7 Seconds or Less Suns is what got me there, he was a big part of that, and we could not have done that without him,” D’Antoni said.

During D’Antoni’s four-season tenure with the Suns from 2004-08, they won 62, 54, 61 and 55 games, and Marion’s defense and versatility were big reasons why.

“He could guard anybody,” D’Antoni said. “He ran like a deer and just put up incredible numbers.”
