Valley Suns set training camp roster

The Valley Suns on Sunday set a 16-man training camp roster ahead of their Nov. 8 debut as a franchise.

Before the first game as the Suns’ G League franchise, that group of players will be cut down by one. Three two-way players will additionally shuttle between the Valley Suns, who will play at Arizona State University’s Mullett Arena, and the NBA squad.

To paint a picture of the busy and complicated roster-building track the Valley Suns have been on to prepare for their first season, the training camp roster features no players whose rights were selected in the expansion draft back in June.

The Valley Suns front office pulled off a handful of trades shipping off the rights of many of those players, including former top-three NBA Draft pick Jahlil Okafor.

The expansion draft did not guarantee the Suns would ever roster those players. It simply gave the Valley team returning player rights if those individuals opted to appear in the G League this coming season.

The roster also includes 2024 G League Draft picks Nate Roberts and Olin Carter III, plus Phoenix Suns training camp invitees Moses Wood and Mamadi Diakite.

Guards Collin Gillespie and TyTy Washington, plus wing Jalen Bridges, make up the three two-way players who could see time in both leagues.

Gillespie has been first of the trio to appear for the NBA club, as he earned rotation minutes on Saturday against the Dallas Mavericks due to injuries at guard.
