Prince Dorbah, Arizona State defense stand tall to pull out comeback vs. No. 24 TCU

After trailing 17-0 and cutting that to three at halftime on Friday night, Arizona State successfully came back 27-24 with strong defensive contributions against No. 24 TCU at Mountain America Stadium.

In a game which the Sun Devils defense had six sacks, linebacker Martell Hughes sealed the comeback with an interception of TCU quarterback Josh Hoover with 45 seconds on the clock.

All kinds of penalties shrouded the final offensive sequence for ASU, but kicker Jesus Gomez calmly drove a field goal through the uprights to give the Sun Devils its first lead of the game, 27-24.

After a career 4-for-4 game at Baylor, Gomez came back down to earth with a 2-for-4 night but made thego-ahead kick that mattered in the end.

“I never had a doubt,” Kenny Dillingham said postgame of the game winner. “If we had to kick a 56-yarder to win that thing, I wouldn’t have even looked. He would’ve made it.

“That dude, the way he prepares, the way he goes about his business. Like, zero doubt ever that he was gonna make the kick with the game on the line.”

It certainly wasn’t “the exact same way” the Sun Devils defeated Baylor 27-24 last week, but to Dillingham’s chagrin, it was close with another Gomez game-winner.

Defensive end Prince Dorbah got home for the a strip-sack of Hoover with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, which set up ASU for the unlikely opportunity to win the game in regulation.

The play marked Dorbah’s third sack of the game and Keyshaun Elliot, Clayton Smith and Elijah O’Neal each accounted for one.

ASU picked up its eighth consecutive Big 12 win since joining the conference last season.

The receiver-running back pair of Jordyn Tyson and Raleek Brown stuffed the stat sheet with more than 250 combined yards and two touchdowns. Tyson caught the game-tying score on fourth-and-goal at the five-yard line with 1:50 left.

The AP preseason All-American Tyson also galvanized a struggling first-half offense with a 57-yard score to get ASU on the board.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt had an efficient game of 27-for-39 passing for 291 yards (7.5 yards per pass) and two touchdowns. He also ran for for 62 yards, including a 24-yard pop that set up his own rushing touchdown.
