ASU, Kenny Dillingham reportedly ‘close’ to amended contract agreement

Arizona State and Kenny Dillingham are “close” to agreeing on an amended contract that would raise his base compensation, SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman reported Saturday.

Discussions began at the end of the regular season and continued into the weekend as Dillingham became a betting favorite for the Michigan opening, Karpman added.

The Michigan job unexpectedly opened after Sherrone Moore was fired for cause after two seasons, in which he led the Wolverines to a 17-8 record.

Dillingham was targeted as a young, rising voice with a 2024 College Football Playoff appearance and conference title to his name after ASU entered that season picked last in the Big 12.

He had previously shut down his candidacy for the LSU and Penn State openings after ASU’s win over West Virginia. He went on to tell the Travis Take Two Podcast that he “talked to zero people about any other job” during the season.

Both statements came ahead of the Michigan job opening.

The Sun Devils are 22-16 (.579) under Dillingham in three seasons.

He was hired ahead of the 2023 season to replace Herm Edwards, who left the program dealing with sanctions for recruiting violations that led to a self-imposed bowl ban in Dillingham’s first season.

Following the 3-9 campaign, Dillingham addressed needs in the portal, adding quarterback Sam Leavitt to lead an offense that had skill players such as Cam Skattebo and Jordyn Tyson. That group led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship in their inaugural year in the conference.

Leavitt, Tyson and many others battled injuries throughout 2025, and ASU finished sixth in the conference at 8-4. Its Big 12 title hopes were still alive as its last regular-season game kicked off.
