Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo finishes 5th in Heisman voting

Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo finished just outside the threshold to earn a trip to New York City as a Heisman finalist.

Skattebo came in No. 5 in the Heisman voting, right behind finalists Ashon Jeanty (Boise State), Travis Hunter (Colorado), Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) and Cam Ward (Miami). The winner will be announced on Saturday.

Skattebo bounced off defenders and dragged bodies into the end zone all season for Arizona State, setting the tone for a team that exceeded expectations to reach the College Football Playoff. Perhaps overlooked nationally for much of the season, Skattebo reeled in attention for his dominant performance in the Big 12 title game against Iowa State.

The senior ran for 170 yards on 16 carries, averaging 10.6 yards per rush. He added 38 receiving yards, pushing his number of games with 200 scrimmage yards to four, tied for second in FBS. Only Jeanty has more (seven).

Skatteo also scored three total touchdowns in the commanding 45-19 win, sending a message by hitting the Heisman pose in the end zone. He declared himself the best running back in the country postgame.

On the season, Skattebo has gained 1,586 rushing yards and needs 85 more to pass Eno Benjamin for the program record. Benjamin played 13 games in 2018, while Skattebo has played in 12 this year so far.

His next chance is on New Year’s Day in the Peach Bowl against the winner of Texas and Clemson.

Skattebo has also picked up 506 receiving yards and 22 total touchdowns this season. He tied the program’s single-season record for total touchdowns and rushing touchdowns (19).

No Big 12 player has ever gained 1,500 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season, and no FBS player has done so since Christian McCaffrey in 2015.

Skattebo earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team.
