TEMPE — Sun Devil or Wildcat? What about a Sun Devil scoring a touchdown out of the wildcat package?
Arizona State freshman running back Cardae Mack scored his first college touchdown Saturday against Hawaii — out of the package that ironically shares the Sun Devils’ rival’s name — to give ASU a 14-3 lead in the first half.
Mack is a fitting choice for which ASU running back should run the package, as he played quarterback at his Texas high school and threw for over 2,000 yards as a senior. His ability to both throw and run keeps defenses honest.
The Sun Devils didn’t have to threaten the pass in this instance, however, as the middle of the line clogged up from one yard out and Mack bounced it outside.

“I know people aren’t going to let me say the word ‘wildcat.’ I’m sorry, alright?” head coach Kenny Dillingham said on Sept. 9 when discussing the package. “It’s the wildcat, guys. I apologize. It’s all I know when I think of that formation. So I truly, to my core, apologize. I don’t know what to tell you.”
The package made its debut in the season opener, with Mack converting two fourth downs across his three wildcat snaps in the game.
