TEMPE — Arizona State’s freshman quarterback took a turn on the receiving end Saturday as Jake Fette caught the first touchdown of the game against Colorado.

Fette lined up in a pistol formation with fellow freshman Cardae Mack behind him before motioning out wide. Mack, who has frequently played as a wildcat quarterback for the Sun Devils, initially pump faked the throw before beginning to run, and he got the throw off once the defense seemed to have the play under wraps.

Fette previously caught an eight-yard pass from Mack on ASU’s first drive of the game.

Fette and Mack make up a young backfield that has enormous potential going forward for the Sun Devils, and head coach Kenny Dillingham is confident that ASU can retain them at a time when “But they’ll hit the portal” is heard quickly after young players pop away from the blue-blood programs.

“I think we have a minimum of four to five … guys that we’ve seen on tape that I think will play this game for a long time in that freshman class,” Dillingham told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta Friday. “I think those guys want to be here for the long haul. I know the initial reaction’s going to be ‘Are you going to be able to keep them in this new era?’ … Yeah, we are.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that these guys that we recruit and that we sign that are really good players out of high school, that we retain.”
