TEMPE — Arizona State quarterback Mikey Keene is “honestly questionable” for Saturday’s game at No. 8 BYU, head coach Kenny Dillingham said Monday.
Keene limped off the field with the help of trainers late in the first half on Saturday after Kansas State linebacker Darien Whitaker rolled into his legs. The quarterback was seen standing on the sideline with a brace around his right knee during the second half.
“We’ll see where Mikey’s at. Mikey is, like, honestly questionable,” Dillingham said. “He’s not doubtful. He is questionable today. And he’ll go out there, we’ll see what he does in practice tomorrow. But that’s a tough competitor and a fighter, and I know he’s going to want to be on the field.”
Dillingham said postgame Saturday that freshman Jake Fette, who replaced the struggling Cutter Boley after Boley initially relieved Keene, was anticipated to start Saturday at BYU barring Keene getting good news.
Dillingham reiterated Monday that Fette will get the start if Keene can’t go.
Keene, a Chandler High School product, had 160 passing yards with 10 completions on 19 attempts Saturday, including a 51-yard pass to Reed Harris on ASU’s first offensive play.
He has thrown for 448 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, completing 63.9% of his passes across five quarters played in three games this season.
The ASU offense totaled 27 yards in 14 plays with Boley at quarterback, leading to Fette getting his first action against an FBS opponent.
Fette was 3 of 6 for 45 passing yards and led ASU to 145 total yards across his four drives. The Sun Devils were down 17-14 when he entered and won 28-14 behind four touchdowns from freshman running back Cardae Mack.

Somewhat good news. Just please don’t put Boley back in. Nothing against Boley but he needs to get his game right and it’s far from that right now.
