Wildcats G Mathurin named Pac-12 Player of the Week for 29-point game

Swingman Bennedict Mathurin scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 90-65 blowout win for the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday, and the performance against Oregon State earned the sophomore the Pac-12 Player of the Week award.

Mathurin went 11-of-18 and 4-of-9 from three-point range in the victory against the Beavers. He was two points off his career high, which came last January also against the Beavers.

He put together the performance during Arizona’s only game in the past week after a Pac-12 opener set for Thursday with the Washington Huskies was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns on UW’s end.

Mathurin’s win is the second conference player of the week honor for the Wildcats this season. Center Christian Koloko won the award on Nov. 22.

The Wildcats moved to 7-0 with the victory against Oregon State.

Mathurin is averaging 16 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He’s shooting 45% overall and 34% from three this season.

Arizona next takes on the Wyoming Cowboys on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
