Noah Fifita’s 47-yard TD to Luke Wysong 1 of 3 Arizona scores through air in 1st half

The airspace above Tucson was cleared for quarterback Noah Fifita and the Arizona Wildcats, who had three passing touchdowns in the first half as part of its 41-13 win against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Fifita’s third touchdown was the most impressive, as he evaded the oncoming pressure to get the throw down field to New Mexico transfer receiver Luke Wysong, who found the running lane for his first touchdown as a Wildcat.

Wysong arrived to Arizona as a heralded transfer addition (69 catches for 840 yards last season) but through four games had just eight catches for 128 yards without a touchdown.

Fifita found Wysong again for a 20-yard completion to set up a last-second field goal for a 24-6 lead at the half, with Wysong’s five catches for 92 yards nearly doubling his season total in just one half.

Another newcomer receiver caught Arizona’s first two touchdowns, with Kansas State transfer and Chandler native Tre Spivey throwing some moves at defenders to secure his path to the end zone on the second.

Because his two touchdowns came on his only two receptions of the half, it brought his season numbers to four touchdowns on seven catches, scoring on more than half his touches.

The only real blemish of Fifita’s first half (21-for-28 passing for 244 yards and three touchdowns) was an interception he threw a few plays after his defense caught its own interception, nullifying the sequence.

Arizona entered the game searching for its first Big 12 win of the season. Its Kansas State win early in the season didn’t count because it was scheduled before Arizona joined the Big 12, and the Wildcats fell at Iowa State in its conference opener last week, 39-14.
