Arizona Cardinals safety Andrew Wingard is dealing with a bone bruise in his knee from Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler added a timeline for Wingard’s return is uncertain but that it’s overall good news for the veteran.
Wingard went down in the first quarter of Arizona’s 36-24 loss to New York. He was carted off the field and did not return to action.
The veteran quickly inserted himself as a defensive starter in his first season with the franchise. He beat out Rabbit Taylor-Demerson for the role and has fit in nicely alongside Budda Baker in the secondary.
He has recorded an interception, one pass defensed, a forced fumble and a team-leading three tackles for loss in four games played.
With Wingard on the shelf, undrafted rookie safety Wydett Williams stepped in as the next man up.
He’ll likely see more snaps come his way while Wingard recovers.
“Dett did great. He’s been prepared. He’s been working hard. Ever since he got here, he’s been locked in and doing what he needs to do,” cornerback Garrett Williams said on Monday.
“Nobody was really worried about him going in because he stays ready, he’s prepared and he’s shown himself. Even in the preseason, he’s stood out and it’s carrying it over to the season.”
