Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner will start the regular season on injured reserve with a designation to return, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Conner avoided the physically unable to perform list to start training camp but has yet to take part in any team drills. When he practices, it has been no more than individual work.

As head coach Mike LaFleur put it, Conner is focusing on a “return to performance.”

Conner went down with a gruesome season-ending foot injury early last year and continues to work his way back to full strength.

The veteran running back remained with Arizona this offseason after reworking his contract with the franchise.

That being said, Arizona’s RBs room got a major facelift with the additions of Tyler Allgeier and Jeremiyah Love this offseason.

Conner’s days as Arizona’s undisputed starting option were instantly over with the moves, though he is still expected to contribute when fully healthy.

And aside from what he can bring to the backfield on the field, he also presents a trusted veteran presence in the locker room.
