It’s not Carson Beck time yet. When asked about altering any quarterback arrangements, Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said veteran Gardner Minshew is the team’s backup on Monday.
However, LaFleur added that can change.
“Right now, Gardner is our backup. But if we feel like (Beck being available is) going to give us our best chance to be successful on Sunday, then we’ll certainly have those discussions,” LaFleur told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “Obviously, he wasn’t yesterday, but that doesn’t mean moving forward he won’t be.”
The Cardinals head coach told reporters on Monday the coaching staff will have conversations on Beck’s role moving forward on Tuesday.
“We haven’t had those discussions. We’ll have that discussion tomorrow at about noon,” LaFleur said.
Beck has yet to be active for a game since he started the Hall of Fame game to kick off the preseason. The third-round draft pick completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in his lone start, sparking excitement in the Valley.
Minshew and Kedon Slovis got the bulk of the rest of the Cardinals’ preseason reps under center, with Brissett throwing a total of five passes in preseason.
Since the regular season began, Brissett has been the only quarterback on the roster to see the field. After a fourth straight loss, LaFleur is sticking by his starter.
“I thought Jacoby did good stuff (against the Detroit Lions). Are there plays that he wants back? Absolutely. Just like there’s play calls that I want back? Just like, there’s plays that all these guys want back,” LaFleur told Burns & Gambo. “But he sat back there. He hung tough. He was delivering. I thought he was extremely accurate.
“I thought he was pinpoint accurate for the most part. Again, that was a total team loss. That was not on the quarterback.”
