Cardinals to carry over $6.4 million of cap space into 2019

The Arizona Cardinals will take $6.4 million of their unused salary cap space from the 2018 season into 2019.

The NFL Players Association released the carry-over amounts for each NFL team on Thursday, and while Arizona’s figure is middle-of-the-road, it’s enough to keep the team in the top 10 of projected total cap space heading into the offseason.

According to Spotrac.com projections, the Cardinals will have the 10th most cap space of $49.3 million based on their top 51 players on the roster at present. Including all of their players signed for 2019 as of the first day in February, they also rank 10th in the league with $46.9 million in remaining space.

Of course, the flexibility can increase if Arizona releases any players selectively as to not add more dead cap space onto the team’s tab.

The Cardinals already have a bit of money counting against them as dead cap thanks to the Sam Bradford signing a year ago.

The veteran quarterback was guaranteed $15 million over a one-year deal that had a second-year team option on it. Arizona released Bradford midseason, and while more than $10 million was left on the 2018 cap sheet, another $5 million was pushed until 2019.

Also of note as the Cardinals and general manager Steve Keim prepare for the offseason, they will be moving forward without Mike Disner, who oversaw salary cap management as Arizona’s director of football administration from 2013-18. Disner joined the Detroit Lions front office as their VP of football administration.
