Jonathan Gannon calls sideline interaction with Emari Demercado ‘a mistake’

TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals running back Emari Demercado went viral for the wrong reason in his team’s 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

But for as much was made for Demercado’s actions on the field, the same can be said about head coach Jonathan Gannon’s interaction with the running back on the sideline.

While Demercado was being talked to by offensive linemen Paris Johnson Jr. and Will Hernandez, Gannon got face to face with Demercado for a spirited discussion before slapping his shoulder pads and walking off.

The head coach on Monday apologized for the interaction on Monday.

“It was a mistake.”

“I woke up this morning and didn’t feel great about it, honestly,” Gannon said. “In the team meeting, I addressed it. I apologized to Emari, I apologized to the team. I just told them I let the moment of what happened get the better of me there.

“I try to be emotionally stable and calm because my job is to solve problems during a game and kind of lead the charge on that. So that’s not really who I am, who I want to be and I told the guys that today.”

What led to Jonathan Gannon’s fiery interaction with Cardinals RB Emari Demercado?

Celebrating his would-be 72-yard touchdown run prematurely, Demercado slowed up and dropped the ball before crossing the goal line late in the third quarter.

Had he held onto the rock for a second longer, the score would have counted and the Titans would have been dead and buried by that point in what would have been a three-score game.

Instead, the Titans were given a lifeline.

The rest is history, with the play resulting in a touchback instead of a touchdown before Tennessee mounted one of the most improbable comebacks in NFL history.

There were certainly other moments on Sunday that played key roles in Arizona’s downfall for a third straight week, but it’s hard not to look at Demercado’s gaffe as the biggest.

Gannon said Demercado would not face punishment for the blunder.
