ARIZONA CARDINALS

By the numbers: Wild stats from a wild Cardinals win in Dallas

The win probability and the history suggested the Cardinals had virtually no shot to come back, but they did.

Led by backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, the Arizona Cardinals won a game during which they trailed 17-3 late in the third quarter, with a final score of 33-30.

The Dallas Cowboys were ahead by 14 points with 11 minutes to play and 10 points with less than three minutes left on the clock, as the end of this game was a saga in and of itself.

The Cardinals beating the Cowboys is nothing new, considering Arizona has won nine of the last 10 in this matchup going back nearly two decades.

But the combination of Arizona coming back from down 14 in the fourth quarter and Dallas blowing such a lead at home made it a unique experience.

According to ESPN Insights, the Cardinals were 1-147-1 since 2000 when trailing by 14-plus in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys’ all-time largest fourth-quarter blown lead — both in the regular season and playoffs — was 14 points entering Sunday.

The Cowboys are now 342-3-1 when leading in the fourth quarter by 14-plus points in a history that goes back to 1960. This was the first such loss that occurred in Dallas.

Let’s use some wild stats to look back on a memorable and potentially impactful comeback victory for Arizona:

Gardner Minshew II performance for the Cardinals stands alone this century

Quarterback Gardner Minshew II replaced Jacoby Brissett with 1:35 left in the third quarter, and he finished the game with 188 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The last time a quarterback threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in a game in which he did not start was Bobby Hebert of the Atlanta Falcons in 1993 against the New Orleans Saints, according to the Cardinals.

And Hebert came in during the first quarter, not the end of the third!

Minshew’s quarterback rating was nearly 100 points higher than Brissett’s, at 137.3 to 41.8.

Going deep

On throws beyond 20 yards, Minshew went 3-for-4 with 61 yards, according to Pro Football Focus.

Brissett on throws of at least 20 yards this season is 5-for-28 with 129 yards.

Cardinals feel at home in Dallas

The Cardinals are 5-0 at AT&T Stadium, also known as Jerry’s World, which opened in 2009.

Only the Philadelphia Eagles have more wins in the building, and as an NFC East rival, they are 7-10. No other team has five wins and no losses in that building.

All ‘upsets’

The Cardinals have not been the betting favorites to win any of their last 10 games against the Cowboys. Three times, the Cowboys were favored by at least a touchdown and lost, including on Sunday:

Win probability

Win probability fluctuates with each play, but it can tell a story of how unlikely a comeback was in the moment. When the Cowboys kicked a field go to go up 10 points with 3:54 left, their win probability was at a game-high 98.7%. It was done, or so the numbers would say.

The Cardinals followed with an 80-yard drive in 63 seconds with no timeouts.

Cardinals defense holds up

It was not a perfect performance for Arizona’s defense, but the unit competed and ultimately made timely stops to hold Dallas to field goals in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals held the Cowboys to five or fewer yards on seven out of 12 possessions, including late in the fourth quarter when Dallas had a chance to ice the game after recovering the onside kick.

The Cowboys gained 51 net yards in the fourth quarter and overtime. In the same span, the Cardinals gained 263.

Arizona also won a game in which it allowed 30 points for the first time since 2023 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Double pancake block

This is less of a specific stat and more of a spectacle of a play by center Hjalte Froholdt, who was questionable to play with a knee injury.

On a 52-yard rush from Tyler Allgeier that set up a touchdown, Froholdt dropped Cowboys defensive back Caleb Downs twice.

Speaking of Allgeier

Allgeier’s 52-yard rush directly followed a 63-yard touchdown run.

It was the first time a rusher gained 50-plus yards on consecutive runs since Tampa Bay’s Doug Martin in 2012, per the Cardinals. The last rusher to do this against the Cowboys was Denver Hall of Famer Terrell Davis in 1998.

Hey how cool would it be if GM turned in this ridiculously good stretch that had us in contention for a playoff spot??? Never say never when a team can rally like that!!

Moreover imagine if GM was playing vs Giants and Niners?

They made the announcement. No one in Seattle would be fooled if we tried to keep it under wraps.

No word from brass headquarters yet, but if LaFleur is agonizing over a QB switch, he should have his head examined.
