‘I’ll be a Cardinal forever’: Larry Fitzgerald inducted into Cardinals’ Ring of Honor

The Hall of Famer thanked the Bidwill family, other inductees, his family and, of course, the fans during his speech. "I started here. I wanted to finish here. And now my name gets to stay here," Fitzgerald said.

Larry Fitzgerald was inducted into the Arizona Cardinals’ Ring of Honor during halftime of the team’s game on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

After being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, Larry Legend now has his name forever in State Farm Stadium, next to Pat Tillman, and his No. 11 is retired.

“In Arizona, you guys gave me something far more than a career. You gave me a home. And that means so much to me,” Fitzgerald said. “Hearing that chant, it still has the hair on my arms standing up.”

In classic Fitzgerald fashion, he apologized for not giving a proper goodbye to fans when he retired. He noted the suffering and uncertainty the world was going through in 2020, saying he didn’t feel like celebrating his career was the right thing to do at the time.

But Sunday at State Farm Stadium, in front of many No. 11s in the stands, was the perfect time to honor Fitzgerald’s legendary career. The Hall of Famer thanked the Bidwill family, other inductees, his family and, of course, the fans during his speech.

“I started here. I wanted to finish here. And now my name gets to stay here,” Fitzgerald said. “But I want you guys to know that name belongs to you all, too. I’ll be a Cardinal forever. God bless you, Red Sea.”

Fitz is the dictionary definition of class act. We were lucky to have him all those years (and still have him in many ways). The cynic in me though has to feel a bit of sadness that his talent and professionalism was spent in an organization seemingly always dedicated to mediocrity. But if he did not spend his entire career in AZ (ala Shane Doan and - so far - Devin Booker), we would have been deprived of his elegance and humility.
