Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett to start vs. Seahawks, regardless of Kyler Murray’s health

Jacoby Brissett will start on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters at his Tuesday press conference.

Brissett will start in place of Kyler Murray, who has been sidelined by a foot injury for the past three games.

Gannon told Arizona Sports that even if Murray was healthy, he was going to make the decision to go with Brissett as the starting quarterback.

“Yeah, I mean it’s a hypothetical to me but yeah I like where we’re at right now with the offense moving forward,” Gannon told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Tuesday.

“I think with the clarity it provides game-planning for our team, I think that’s important, and we’ll go from there,” Gannon said at his Tuesday presser.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Murray and the Cardinals talked with multiple doctors and were told the timetable for Murray’s recovery is between 4-8 weeks. The doctors said there is an increased chance of reaggravation until Murray’s injury is properly healed.

In Murray’s absence, Brissett has completed 66% of this throws for 860 yards and six touchdowns to one interception. He added 49 yards on 14 carries.

Brissett’s passer rating (102.5) is 10th in the NFL at this point, while Murray’s (88.6) ranks 22nd.

Brissett has gone 1-2 at quarterback, but the Cardinals have converted over 50% of their third downs. In the five games with Murray starting, the Cardinals went 2-3 and never reached more than 46% (Week 1).

Gannon’s announcement comes after Brissett led the Cardinals to a 27-17 Monday Night Football win over the Dallas Cowboys.

“I do like how we’re operating as an offense,” Gannon said. “In my mind I take all the variables that I have to make a decision and make the decision when I need to, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job on offense. I like what the offense is doing right now.”

At his Tuesday press conference, Gannon said he does not know if putting Murray on the IR is a possibility. Gannon said he talked to Murray on Tuesday and the quarterback in his seventh season with the Cardinals is “doing well” and wants to be out there.

“He’s a good teammate and he’s working to get healthy,” Gannon said.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported surgery is not under consideration for Murray, but the Cardinals signal caller is still not moving normally.
