Cardinals’ talks with Jacoby Brissett ‘good from a dialogue standpoint’

"He's played a lot of football. We're in communication and he knows what the expectation is," Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said.

TEMPE — The Arizona Cardinals and veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett continue to have discussions amid his request for a raise and absence from voluntary work this offseason.

“Ongoing, everything’s good from a dialogue standpoint. But like we said, this is voluntary, and that’s where we’ll leave it,” first-year head coach Mike LaFleur said Friday as Arizona’s rookie minicamp began.

LaFleur added Brissett “knows what the expectation is” when asked if the head coach felt behind the eight ball with the expected Week 1 starter not taking part in the voluntary portion of the offseason.

“He’s played a lot of football. We’re in communication, and he knows what the expectation is,” LaFleur said.

Brissett is seeking a raise that pays him as Arizona’s starter.

Throughout the contract talks, the Cardinals have remained noncommittal on naming a starter and have since added to the roster with third-round pick Carson Beck, who saw his Cardinals career get underway this week.

With Brissett currently not in the picture, Gardner Minshew has stepped in as the lead man during voluntary work this offseason.

It hasn’t taken long for Paris Johnson Jr. and others on the roster to connect with Minshew.

“He has a great personality. He’s definitely a character,” Johnson told Arizona Sports’ Cardinals Corner this past week. “It’s funny because his locker is actually right next to mine. I’m able to talk to him every day.

“The guy he is, how dialed in he is about the game, he’s truly a football guy. It’s great to have another guy like that in the building. He’s awesome. He’s super authentic.”

Pay the man his cash🤑I don’t get the reticence here. You aren’t signing Rodgers. Minshew and Beck are unknowables. You have a body of work in JB, around which you can build🤷🏽Pay the man his cash🤑
