Jacoby Brissett not shying away from the noise as the losses pile up

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett isn't concerned in the slightest about the growing chatter about his spot in the starting lineup.

TEMPE — Talk isn’t anything new for Arizona Cardinals veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

Whether it be in Arizona or one of his five other previous stops, there’s been some level of it.

After all, that’s the territory of being an NFL quarterback, a position magnified by wins and losses. One week, you’re the hero. The next, you’re the villain.

“It’s part of the gig, right? I’m not shying away from any of that,” the veteran signal caller said Wednesday.

But while the signal caller added he couldn’t care less about what’s being said online or on TV, there’s no denying it’s gotten a lot louder in recent weeks.

After coming away with a win filled with fool’s gold against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, it’s been a lot of the same with Brissett under center for Arizona, and not in a good way.

Including his 1-3 mark this year as the franchise’s starter, Brissett is now 2-14 in the role since taking over for former franchise signal caller Kyler Murray midseason last year.

Are the losses all on him? No. The defense has not done him any favors with 30 points feeling like the norm for opposing offenses at this point.

And while Brissett has gotten way more out of Trey McBride and Michael Wilson, the quarterback’s win percentage looms large in every conversation suggesting the team make a change.

The way he ended Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants only stoked the flames of the quarterback talk.

Despite having a fresh set of downs and a timeout on New York’s four-yard line late in the game, Brissett and the offense stalled out in the worst of ways.

Three incompletions and a telegraphed pick-6 later and the Cardinals now sit at 1-3.

Again, it’s not all on Brissett. The defense again gave up 30-plus points. The play-calling was predictable under first-year head coach Mike LaFleur.

But LaFleur isn’t falling out of his role anytime soon. That can’t be said for Brissett.

If the losses keep piling up, LaFleur is going to be forced to make a change.

Defensively, that likely starts with moving on from coordinator Nick Rallis.

On the other side of the football, it starts under center, especially if the offense fails to take the appropriate steps forward.

For now, Brissett is still the guy when the Cardinals take on a porous Detroit Lions defense that is giving up more yards per game (423.8) than any other team and is allowing the second-most points per game (31.8).

But another loss and more subpar offensive play against Detroit — regardless of its pass rush — are only going to speed up the timeline of switching up the starting lineup and increase the decibels of all that chatter.
