TEMPE — The phrase “Year 3 breakout” has largely been associated with Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

After two years of mixed results, highlighted by an injury-filled 2025, all eyes are on how Harrison is going to make good on his first-round price tag.

Outside noise is just that and something players need to stay above it, as head coach Mike LaFleur explained Friday. Don’t completely ignore it but also don’t let it consume you.

So while Harrison has heard the chatter, he’s focused on what’s directly in front of him and staying on the field, not any end-of-season totals.

“If I stay healthy, I think it’s all just going to take care of itself. I know the kind of player I am and know what I can do,” Harrison said Wednesday. “I just want to go out there and play football. I’ve been doing my whole life.

“Breakout … is the term that everybody likes to use but I’m just going to go out there and play football and do what I know I can do,” the wideout added. “I know what I’m capable of. I have confidence in myself to go out there. It might be a breakout to you know other people, but I know what I can do.”

Harrison’s physical traits are evident. He’s got the size and playmaking ability to hang with the best of them. He can separate with the best of them.

But it’s that confidence he referenced that is the ultimate key for Harrison if he hopes to get fully back on top and more importantly, stay there.

Mike LaFleur has clearly been a big help in that department. Harrison calling it “a wide receiver’s dream” to have a head coach with a heavy background and emphasis at wide receiver wasn’t just fluff.

You can tell he’s much more confident and comfortable operating under LaFleur’s tutelage.

“I feel like when you can get a new coach in the building sometimes that kind of sparks like a new sense of confidence and like a new sense of urgency,” former NFL and CFL quarterback Chris Streveler told Arizona Sports’ Cardinals Corner. “I’m excited to see how that carries over with him.”

The biggest indicator of where Harrison’s head is at, however, happened back in training camp.

Despite having a day filled with viral drops that made the rounds just about everywhere, the wide receiver responded in a huge way.

There hasn’t been a drop-off since.

“The guy is really smart. I mean really, really smart,” offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said Thursday. “It’s crazy. I don’t know if he’s got a mental error. His work ethic and how hard he works out there is so impressive. You can kind of throw anything at him and he’ll know probably everyone’s position and what their doing.

“He’s got all those intangibles. The size, the speed, the strength and all that stuff. I’m excited for him to be able to have this first game, all of us.”
